What is a Stocks and Shares ISA?

A Stocks and Shares ISA, also known as an Investment ISA, allows you to invest your money over a medium to long-term period of at least 5 years, with the possibility of higher returns than you would get with a Cash ISA, as long as you are happy to take some risks with your savings.

With this type of account you can either choose to invest in funds – buying units in ready-made baskets of investments, or else you can research and buy your own shares. This could include investing your money in individual shares, investment funds, investment trusts, government bonds, corporate bonds and more. Many companies offer hundreds of investment baskets and portfolios for you to choose from, each with different levels of risk and reward.

Your annual ISA allowance for Stocks and Shares is £20,000 each year. You don’t have to pay income tax or capital gains tax on money you earn from your investments made through the ISA, up to a certain limit. However with this type of ISA there are usually fees and charges to consider, which can include account or platform fees, fund management charges, buying and selling charges and transfer out fees.

How much money can I put into a Stocks and Shares ISA?

The total amount you can save into a Stocks and Share ISA in the current tax year is £20,000. This is known as your ISA allowance. You can invest up to this same amount every tax year, but you can only put money into one Cash ISA and/or one Stocks and Shares ISA and/or one Lifetime ISA and/or one Innovative Finance ISA in each tax year. This £20,000 limit applies to each adult, so if you are married or have a civil partner you each have a £20,000 limit each year.

How many Stocks and Shares ISAs can I have?

You can open one new Stocks and Shares ISA in your name each tax year, which runs from April 6th – April 5^th, and you can only pay into one Stocks and Shares ISA each tax year too. Once the financial year is complete, however, you may open a new Stocks and Shares ISA with a different provider if you want to. You can repeat this every tax year.

You are allowed to divide your annual allowance according to any proportion you like, which means you can split your yearly ISA allowance of £20,000 across the different types of ISA that you hold.
